What is DJs Against Hunger?

DJs Against Hunger is a philanthropic endeavor created to give pre-exisitng parties an opportunity to give back to the communities in which they party in. DJs have the power to command the attention of hundreds and at times THOUSANDS of people at one time through music. Imagine the impact you could have if you challenged those same people to give nonperishable goods to their local food pantry or food bank by way of a party or event already in attendance.

DJs Against Hunger was started in Brooklyn, New York and is the brainchild of professor, urbanist and arts and culture impresario Eric Blackwell. Inspired by philanthropist George Soros, specifically in 2009, where he gave away $35 million dollars of his own money to needy kids in New York for his birthday, Mr. Blackwell endeavored to make his birthday a day of service.

THE HARD TRUTH

48.1 million Americans lived in food insecure households, including 32.8 million adults and 15.3 million children.*

14 percent of households (17.4 million households) were food insecure.*

Households that had higher rates of food insecurity than the national average included households with children (19%), especially households with children headed by single women (35%) or single men (22%), Black non-Hispanic households (26%) and Hispanic households (22%).*

The DJs Against Hunger logo design actually has some significance. Note the mythical sound bird which travels around the world feeding the hungry. The speakers in the wings symbolize the trans-formative nature of music as it has the ability to effect and feed the soul. The wheat crescent on the chest symbolic of food as wheat is the simplest form of food. The globe on the head as symbolic of the reach we endeavor to have with the DJs Against Hunger effort.
